"The real threat if UDC’s preferred Option 4 is selected, is that
in the event of the Elsenham site (3000 houses) not being chosen then the focus for
the 3000 houses site could well turn to Stebbing/Saling, i.e. Boxted Wood/
Andrewsfield. This would be in spite of the many reasons as to why these sites are clearly unsustainable and unsuitable for such development. Therefore we strongly urge everyone to respond to the Uttlesford Consultation.

"APATHY WILL BE CONSTRUED AS “INDIFFERENCE”
4,500 HOUSES EXTENDING STEBBING GREEN TO RAYNE OR ANDREWSFIELD TO SALING WOULD RADICALLY CHANGE OUR WHOLE WAY OF LIFE."

Government deals blow to Warwickshire eco-town plan

Proposals to build an eco-town at Long Marston in Warwickshire (The site of an old watime airfield) have been dealt a blow after the new government announced it would not support any such developments where the local community was in opposition.

The Middle Quinton eco-town, which is on the border of Wychavon and Stratford, had been opposed by local residents and councils, but until the announcement it was unknown if the development would be supported by ministers.

In a letter to all affected councils, deputy director of the housing and growth programmes team within Communities and Local Government, Henry Cleary, set out the new coalition government’s policy on eco-towns.

"In terms of going forward with eco-towns and eco-developments, the housing minister has made clear that his priority is to see that plans are well supported locally and will achieve genuine improvements in sustainability. The government will not designate or impose a solution on a particular area and will not support an eco-town if the local community are opposed to it," the letter stated.

Campaign group Better Accessible Responsible Development (Bard), a coalition of local residents against the development, said the announcement represented a U-turn on the previous government’s policy and was to be welcomed.

David Bliss, chairman of Bard, said: "At long last, some government common sense. Bard volunteers have worked long and hard to protect the countryside surrounding Stratford-upon-Avon. In this, at least, local 'people power' did prevail."
